This
gleaming white building, opened to the public in 1995, was designed
by the illustrious American architect, Richard Meier, in 1995. It
is the culmination of a movement between the Mayor of Barcelona
and the Catalan government to re-establish Raval as an artistic
and cultural focal point. The immense building stands proud, contrasting
with the small restaurants, bars and flats in the narrow streets
of Raval.
The design combines wide-open rooms with a vast amount of exterior
light. The fusion of straight lines with curves is a fine representation
of Mediterranean rationalist architecture. The spacious, minimalist
design of the building allows customers to focus on the art on display.
The permanent collection is a selection of Western contemporary
art from the latter half of the twentieth century, intermingled
with recent art work from local artists. Miquel Barceló,
Miguel Angel Campano and Antoni Tápies are among the artists
represented in this collection. The temporary exhibits attract a
wide variety of contemporary art, including some fascinating inter-active
exhibits. Check out the monthly Love Barcelona guide for more up-to-date
information.
