Gran Teatre del Liceu, first opened in 1847, has been the most important opera house in Spain for over 150 years. It remains one of the most emblematic, fundamental symbols of Barcelona's culture. Although the auditorium was destroyed by a fire in 1994, it has been restored to its original beauty, with virtually exactly the same 19th century architectural design. The fire allowed the owners to improve the acoustics, comfort, sightlines and size of the auditorium, making it even more awe-inspiring.
