Looming over the city is the 18th century Montjuic castle at the top of the mountain. Originally built to defend the city from any potential outside threat and frequently used to torture and repress any Catalan political uprisings during the civil war and Franco regime, the castle now provides a serene setting for a peaceful walk through history. The fresh air and wonderful views are worth the journey. The castle's courtyard is open to the public, but the museum has a small entrance fee.
