The Cathedral, constructed in 1298, is one of the superlative and
expansive celebrations of Barcelona architecture. The spectacular
façade, the intricate attention to detail and its true magnitude
make The Cathedral a centrpiece in Barcelona. At the end of the
19th century, Josep Oriol Mestres and August Font reformed the exterior
design of The Cathedral, introducing a Neo-Gothic style which is
a theme that can be seen throughout the Barri Gottic region. The
vivid stained-glass windows reflect the passages of the New and
Old Testament, whilst the Apostles, etched into the walls of the
cathedral, represent the history of Catholicism. The building is
beautifully illuminated at night, accentuating its spiritual presence.
The most intriguing feature of the inside is the Chapel of the Holy
Christ of Lepanto. It is a wooden image of Christ, eloquently carved
in the 16th century. The high, expansive arches within the cathedral
are supposed to be symbolic of a reaching-out towards Christ. It
is the period in history when architects discovered how structurally
to support buildings of colossal proportions. The Chapel of Santa
Lucia, a transitional Romanesque church, built shortly before The
Cathedral, can be found on the side of The Cathedral..
