The museum is a representation of the history of Barcelona, from
the Roman times through to the birth of the Gothic era. The highlight
of the visit is the descent into the beautifully preserved underground
Roman city; the most expansive underground display in Europe (43,000sq
ft). Intricate details can still be seen in the remains, most particularly
in the mosaic on the floor of a wealthy Roman house. The centrpiece
of the Gothic area is the immense semi-circular stone arches of
the banqueting chamber, used for parliamentary meetings. The chamber
is believed to be the largest constructed in Europe.
