Barri
Gòtic is the oldest part of Barcelona. It began to take shape
as early as the Roman times and has gradually developed over the
years, while maintaining its original character. The centuries of
history entrenched within the area are most clearly reflected in
the maze of narrow, winding streets that intertwine throughout the
area. By comparison the grid infrastructure of the rest of the city
is clearly a carefully planned, modern concept, in order to allow
the traffic to flow easily. Although this makes the Barri Gòtic
area considerably less navigable by car, it allows locals and tourists
to stroll through the pedestrianised streets, without being bothered
by fast-moving vehicles. Barri Gòtic is enriched with historic
buildings, Roman walls, interesting museums, as well as modern shops
and delightful restaurants. This combination of modern and historic
has transformed Barri Gòtic into the most visited area of
the city.
