This hospital was designed by Domènech i Montaner, one of the greatest figures of the Catalan Modernism movement. Montaner despised the grid formation of the city, so he designed the hospital at a 45-degree angle to the norm. This not only enabled him to make a stand, but also allowed the beautiful gardens surrounding the modernist buildings to face directly into the sun. The vivid, nature-like sculptures, intricate murals and multi-faceted mosaics give each pavilion its own character and charm.
