L'Eixample
is characterised by the endless parallel roads which run horizontally
and vertically through the city at perfect 90 degree angles. The
immense grid structure, consisting of 500 identical blocks, was
designed by Ildefons Cerdà, one of the principal pioneers
of contemporary urbanism. The rational, logistical structure of
the Eixample area often gives you the sensation of being stuck within
a massive chess board. The area is teaming with cultural and social
activities. The area contains the highest concentration of Modernist
architecture in the world. Virtually every street displays an example
of its powerful influence. The private and public Modernist works
are fascinating and provide Barcelona with a natural charm that
can be found in few other cities. The curvy, sensual designs of
the buildings have become the most symbolic feature of the city.
It is easy to lose yourself within the dream-like, flowing design
of the Modernist architecture. The beautiful Passeig de Gracia is
the main promenade of The Eixample and it runs from the top of Plaça
Catalunya to the Diagonal.
