Casa
Batlló is the famous house designed by Antoni Gaudí
(1852-1926), the extraordinary Catalan architect. Gaudí was
inspired by nature, and this magical building, with its curvy, sensual
architecture, is a spiritual tribute in wood, ceramic and glass.
From the outside, it looks like a fantasy home, a façade
of strange shapes and colours, but inside, the visionary achievement
of this 19th century architect begins to unfold.
Assisted by a neat audio aid which describes the points of interest
in each room, you begin to understand what Gaudí was trying
to achieve: a unique form of innovative architecture which celebrated,
through its use of different materials and soft, malleable designs,
the mysteries of nature. It's a modern building designed more than
100 years ago, and very tactile!
It's worth paying the extra to go to the roof. Not only do you get
a wonderful view of Barcelona but you need to reach the top to see
the dragon: that's a mystery you will have to solve for yourself.
It is worth having a look at No.35, CASA LLEO MORERA and No.41,
CASA AMATLLER, two more examples of Gaudís modernist creativity
.
