La
Ribera, or El Born as it is more commonly referred to these days,
is the up-and-coming part of town, located next to Barri Gottic,
on the other side of the main road, Via Laietana. New, fashionable
little bars and restaurants seem to open every week. The cobbled,
pedestrian streets have become a stomping ground for tourists and
locals. The peaceful squares and community feel to the area make
it very appealing for people of all ages. El Born was originally
the city's trading and commerce area, due to its location next to
the sea and the thriving Born Market (La Ribera actually means waterfront).
However, ever since the quay was built, pushing El Born further
back from the seafront, and the Born Market was closed, the area
has been transformed into a fashion-conscious haven, full of social
life and activity.
